EXPLAINING THE HADEETH " PUSH THEM (JEWS AND CHRISTIANS) TO THE NARROWEST PART OF THE ROAD"

Question : Kindly explain the hadeeth :
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not initiate the greeting of salaam to a Jew or Christian, and if you meet them in the street, push them to the narrowest part of the road."

[ Narrated by Muslim, 2167, or see Hadith - Sahih Bukhari Book 25, Number 5389, Narrated AbuHurayrah ]
There is a similar hadeeth wherein the prophet (s.a.w) asked us to push women or corner them on the road. does this show the intolerance or bad attitude of Islam towards the women?

Answer :

Many Disbelievers use this hadeeth to mock at the so called tolerance of Islam, however, the sad part is that even so called MUSLIM named passports (Munkarul Hadeeth) reject the command and hadeeth of the Prophet (s.a.w) because of two main reasons :

1) Desires
2) Lack of Proper knowledge

These Munkarul Hadeeth, failing to understand the vastness of Islam, end up rejecting ahadeeth with their weak ta'weelat and presenting funny wujoohaat (reasons) to support their stance. They remind me of the People of Gallelio, who when tried to prove that the earth wasn't flat, his countrymen rejected his claims and even threatned him because THEY COULD NOT COMPREHEND THIS FACT.

Same is the case with these Munkarul Hadeeth today Oh Muslims ! They reject the ahadeeth because they don't have the I.Q to understand. And we all know that the prophet (s.a.w) said : Whoever immitates a nation, he is one of them" . So if these Munkarul hadeeth immitate the people of Gallelio then they too become Fools and if they Imitate the disbelievers who also object to this hadeeth, then they too ..... Nevertheless coming to your Question :

Firstly, Pushing someone towards the end of a road or a corner is not necessarily derogatory in application. It could be both useful as well as discriminatory

AN EXAMPLE :

Abu Usayd al-Ansari narrated that he heard Allah’s Messenger (May peace and blessings be upon him) say to the women on his way out of the mosque when he saw men and women mixing together on their way home:

‘Give way (i.e., walk to the sides) as it is not appropriate for you to walk in the middle the road.’ Thereafter, women would walk so close to the wall that their dresses would get caught on it.

[Ref: Narrated by Abu Dawood in "Kitab al-Adab min Sunanihi, Chapter: Mashyu an-Nisa Ma’ ar-Rijal fi at-Tariq]

Lessons drawn from this hadeeth:

1) As we can see, the prophet (s.a.w) did not only Apply this rule of narrowing a set of people only to Non Muslims but also Muslims

2) Doing so, it did not degrade the status of woman in any way. Even after this incident, women continued to hold big positions like teaching Islam such as :

the jewish orientalist Godziher says :  In particular, A'isha is one of the most important figures in the whole history of hadith literature - not only as one of the earliest reporters of the largest number of hadith, but also as one of their most careful interpreters. [Ibn Sa'd, 8/355.]

And

Al-Tirmidhi narrates in Kitab al-Manaaqib in "Chapter: The Virtues of Aa'isah (may Allaah be pleased with her)" from Abu Moosa RA who said,

"Never did any hadeeth become difficult for us, the companions of Allaah's Messenger, and we asked Aa'ishah except that we found she had knowledge regarding it."

(Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 3883)

And

It is reported from Masrooq that he said:

We swear by Allah, we have seen senior Companions of Allah’s Messenger (salAllaho allaihi wa sallam) asking ‘Aa’ishah RA about inheritance laws.

[Ibn Al-Jawzî, Sifah Al-Safwah, 1/319]

So since the very start of the Islamic era, women were of great importance because nothing is more Important for us Muslims than Islam and islam is knowledge

We had this respect and tradition widespread during the first era followed till date and you may refer to this article to see the Muhaddithaat (female scholars of Hadeeth) : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.in/2013/01/muhaddithaat-women-scholars-of-hadith.html

Apart from this women used to engage in battle, another major event which no religion or culture allowed before Islam. For e.g the famous Khawla bint al Azwar (r.a) who fought like a Lioness among the ranks of Battle field during a campaign led by Khaalid ibn Waleed (R.a)

The Arab Historian, Al Waqidi, tells us about this in his book “The conquering of Al Sham (greater Syria).

Further more, to further prove that despite such a hadeeth, women were not oppressed is the fact that  Islam honoured women, whether as mothers, daughters or sisters. It honoured women as mothers. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, who among people is most deserving of my good company?” He said, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then who?” He said, “Then your father.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5626; Muslim, 2548)

Islam honours women as daughters. It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever has three daughters or three sisters, or two daughters or two sisters, and takes good care of them and fears Allaah with regard to them, will enter Paradise.

(Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, 2/190)

And Islam honours women as wives. It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.”

(Narrated and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi, 3895)

Also see the way Muhammad (s.a.w) treated his wives - The Best Husband ever ! :

http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.in/2012/08/how-the-prophet-treated-his-wives.html

This is such a huge topic that enlisting the virtues, honor and respect Islam gave women in the form of laws of inheritance, cultural respect, and in other means it would take hundreds of pages and if we further move on to comparing Islam with the religions of past, present, and the history of past and present it would take another hundred pages to show how diminishing and futile they look compared to the High status Islam offered women. But to keep it short I'll quote a short passage from the western sources :

Describing the status of the Indian woman, Encyclopedia Britannica states:

In India, subjection was a cardinal principle. Day and night must women be held by their protectors in a state of dependence says Manu. The rule of inheritance was agnatic, that is descent traced through males to the exclusion of females.

In Hindu scriptures, the description of a good wife is as follows: "a woman whose mind, speech and body are kept in subjection, acquires high renown in this world, and, in the next, the same abode with her husband."

In Athens, women were not better off than either the Indian or the Roman women.

Athenian women were always minors, subject to some male - to their father, to their brother, or to some of their male kin.

Her consent in marriage was not generally thought to be necessary and "she was obliged to submit to the wishes of her parents, and receive from them her husband and her lord, even though he were stranger to her."

A Roman wife was described by an historian as: "a babe, a minor, a ward, a person incapable of doing or acting anything according to her own individual taste, a person continually under the tutelage and guardianship of her husband."

In the Encyclopedia Britannica, we find a summary of the legal status of women in the Roman civilization:

In Roman Law a woman was even in historic times completely dependent. If married she and her property passed into the power of her husband... the wife was the purchased property of her husband, and like a slave acquired only for his benefit. A woman could not exercise any civil or public office, could not be a witness, surety, tutor, or curator; she could not adopt or be adopted, or make will or contract. Among the Scandinavian races women were: under perpetual tutelage, whether married or unmarried. As late as the Code of Christian V, at the end of the 17th Century, it was enacted that if a woman married without the consent of her tutor he might have, if he wished, administration and usufruct of her goods during her life.

To see a short summary of the rights offered by Islam to women see :

http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.in/p/download-islamic-books-softwares.html [ See article no. 33, Article 62, Article 63 and 64]

So we learn that women were not oppressed or their status was not looked down upon despite prophet (s.a.w) commanding them to walk at the sides of the road.

3)
The third lesson we learn is that the command of the prophet (s.a.w) was to achieve a greater good. Islam forbids unnecessary mingling of men and women and restricts the interaction subject to certain limitations. This is in order to avoid Fitnah (such as tempations) and I don't think i need to give you or show you the divorce cases due to extra marital affairs, or the number of teenagers getting their abortion done without parents knowing about it, or the number of suicides due to an uhappy relationship or a broken relationship or etc. Any educated individual is aware of these mishaps , and so the prophet (s.a.w) commanded as such to avoid the mixing or touching of men and women which could open the door to further evil.

A Muslim may refer to real stories of how mingling caused havoc in their married and unmarried life here : http://islamqa.info/en/ref/1200

NOW DOES NARROWING THE JEWS AND CHRISTIAN INDICATE INTOLERANCE OF ISLAM?

Explaining the hadeeth :

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not initiate the greeting of salaam to a Jew or Christian, and if you meet them in the street, push them to the narrowest part of the road."

[ Narrated by Muslim, 2167, or see Hadith - Sahih Bukhari Book 25, Number 5389, Narrated AbuHurayrah ]

There are different explanations given by the scholars for this report

Ibn Al-Qayyim writes:

It is said that this was in a specific situation, when they were marching to the tribe of Qurayzah

[Source: Zād al-Ma’ād 2/388; copied from faithinallah website]

As for the Prophet ordering us to force the Christians and Jews to the narrowest parts of the road, well in Awn al-Mabud it has it...

And Ibn Maalik said: meaning don't leave them walking the main pathway if it is in a situation of crowdedness but if the pathway was empty and not crowded then it is okay.

(Muhammad Shams al-Haqq al-Adhim Abadi, Awn al-Ma'bud Sharh Sunan Abu Dawud, Kitab: Al Adab, Bab: Fi Al Salaam A'ala Ahl Al Dhimma, Commentary on Hadith no. 4529  , Source : hadith.al-islam.com/Display/Display.asp?Doc=4&Rec=6466]

Also Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen said...

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) says: "Do not initiate the greeting with a Jew or a Christian, and if you meet one of them on the road, push him to the narrowest part of it." What this means is, do not give them lots of space when you meet them, so that they have plenty of room and you are constricted; rather continue in the direction in which you were headed, and if there is to be any constriction, make it for them. It is well known that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), when he saw the kuffaar (such as the Jews who lived in Madeenah), did not push them so that they ended up against the wall, and neither did his Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) after they conquered other regions.

So what is meant is that just as you should not initiate the greeting with them, you should not make way for them if you meet them; rather you should keep going in the direction in which you were headed, and let them be constricted if the road is not wide enough. There is nothing in this hadeeth to put people off Islam, rather it is a manifestation of the pride of the Muslim, and shows that he does not humble himself before anyone except his Lord.

[Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn 'Uthaymeen, 3/38]

Al-Qurtubi said about the statement of the Prophet, “when you meet any one of them on the roads, force him to go to the narrowest part of it” – it means, do not yield any space on the road to them in a narrow road as an honor to them. And concerning this there is an appropriate situation in this first [aforementioned] situation, and the meaning is not that if you meet them on a wide road that you should then force them to its edge until it constricts them, for that is harming them and we have been prohibited from harming them without reason.

[Fath al-Bari #9342]

Ibn Hajar writes:

It means do not give up your section of the road to them in order to honor and respect them.

[Source: Fatḥ al-Bārī 11/40; via faithinallah]

Note: It was a custom back then and even today that higher dignitories are given way as they pass , just like how the road is emptied when an ambassador or a govt official car passes through , similarly back then and in many places today, giving way to someone is considered a respectful gesture and during those times when the JEWS and CHRISTIANS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN PLOTTED AND REVOLTED AGAINST ISLAM , this command to merely not honor them in such a way was nothing compared to the plotting and abusing and mocking the messenger of God and his allies.

So this Hadeeth does not mean to make the road narrow for them, as this is harming them and we are prohibited from doing so. Rather, its meaning is that a Muslim should not honor them by giving way to them when meeting them [on a narrow road] or by giving them priority when passing and the like, because whoever disbelieves in Allaah and belies His Messengers does not deserve to be honored with this kind of honor.

For more benefit, here is the statement of Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him about the meaning of this Hadeeth, as he said in his book entitled "Al-Mufhim Limaa Ashkala Min Talkhees Muslim": "And the Prophet’s saying “And when you meet any one of them [i.e. the Jews and the Christians] on the road, force him to go to the narrowest part of it” means not to give them priority on a narrow way as an honor and respect for them. Based on this, this sentence would be appropriate to the first sentence [of this Hadeeth]: “Do not initiate Salaam (the Islamic greeting) with the Jews and the Christians when meeting them” in meaning and coordination; however, it does not mean that when meeting them on a wide road, we are supposed to force them to go to its side in order to make the road narrow for them; as this is harming them for no reason, and we are forbidden from harming them.

Some (unaware of the arabic language) may argue then why did he say push or etc? To which we answer that push is the english translation and secondly arabic is a vast and rich language , wherein words and gestures are used differently than the modern day english language. For e.g the prophet (s.a.w) said travelling is an Adhaab (punishment) but this adhaab here does not refer to an actual severe punishment, rather it was an expression in the arabic language to indicate the trouble one undergoes leaving his comfort at his home and travelling.

Another example is when the prophet (s.a.w) addressed 'Ali (r.a) as Abu Turaab (father of mud) which was another arabic customary use of language. There are umpteen such examples but i hope this explains it all.

ISLAM IS INTOLERANT ! REALLY?

When it comes to intolerance, i could quote several passages from the Bible and other religious Books showing how "Tolerant" were the crusaders or others towards women , children and Muslims.

I could even show current world examples , displaying the "utmost justice" (sarcastically speaking) of certain administrations

On the contrary, talking about tolerance, then know that From greeting to etiquette of War, Islam is filled with manners and tolerance. I don't want to get into that but here are few examples that may suffice :

A funeral procession passed in front of the Prophet and he stood up. When he was told that it was the coffin of a jew, he said, "Is it not a living being (soul)?" (Bukhari Book #23, Hadith #399)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: Mujahid said that Abdullah ibn Amr slaughtered a sheep and said: Have you presented a gift from it to my neighbor, the Jew, for I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) say: Gabriel kept on commending (treating well) the neighbour to me so much so that I thought he would make (the jew) an heir  (Abu Dawood Book #41, Hadith #5133)

The Prophet said: Beware! Whosoever oppresses a Muahid (i.e. Non-Muslim living in Muslim land with agreement) or snatches (any of) his rights or causes him pain which he cannot bear, or takes anything from him without his permission, Then “I WILL FIGHT AGAINST SUCH A (MUSLIM) ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT” [Sunnan Abu Dawud, Volume No. 3, Page No. 170, Hadith No. 3052]

A number of the sons of the Prophet’s companions reported on the authority of their fathers: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “If anyone wrongs a person protected by a peace treaty (Non Muslim), detracts from his rights, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, then I will plead for him on the Day of Resurrection.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Leadership, Number 3052, Sahih]

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years [Saheeh Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 391]

I MEAN WHAT MORE COULD ONE WANT? COULD ONE SHOW THE SAME FROM HIS/HER BOOKS? these are just small tiny clippings. Here's a short article showing the Mercy of Muhammad (s.a.w) towards Non Muslims : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.com/2012/09/Mercy-ofthe-prophet-for-Nonmuslims.html

No Racism in Islam : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.in/2012/12/no-racism-in-islam.html

Rights of Prisoners of wars in Islam : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.in/2012/09/the-rights-of-prisoners-of-wars-in-islam.html

ANIMAL RIGHTS IN ISLAM : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.com/2012/09/animal-rights-in-islam.html

CAN YOU SHOW EVEN 50% OF THE ABOVE QUALITIES OF ISLAM IN YOUR BOOKS? OF-COURSE NOT, THEN WHY DO YOU MAKE FACES WHEN WE SAY ISLAM IS THE BEST?

CONCLUSION :

1) If a father keeps his child towards the narrowest section of the road, or if a man tries to keep an Old man or a blind man walk towards the corner of the road or pathway, does it mean he has evil intentions? Of-course not. Similarly, the prophet (s.a.w) to achieve greater good or ease affairs , he commanded the women to walk at the sides and similarly asked Muslims to retain their honor which is a gift from the creator to those who submit their will to him.

2) So if the status of women didn't diminish after this command and neither did the scholars or pious predecessors  treat them badly i.e contradictory to the islamic teachings, then how can you claim that pushing the Jews and Christians to the side (as and when required) diminishes the command Muslims are enjoined upon to treat everyone with mercy, respect, not to violate one's oath, to treat them kindly so on and so forth?

PROOFS FOR NO RACISM IN ISLAM

Allah Says "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers"  [Qur'an 49:11]

Assalamu 'Alaikum. This is a huge topic because Islaam is a religion which promotes equality, brotherhood and abolishes falsehood in more than a million ways. From gathering the kings and slaves together in the row of our daily prayer to spreading the Islamic greeting (Assalamu 'Alaikum) to every Muslim irrespective of him being rich or poor, white or black, - Islam not only preaches, but also helps us implement equality in a variety of easy ways.

This topic is not only related to pure racism based on color or tribe ,but this also has to do with different parameters such as manners, equality, and etc which are related to racism. There are just too many ahadeeth and examples to quote on this topic, This subject is a vast one indeed. Hence I will try my best In sha Allah to make it short but up to the point , so please be patient :)

(I) GOOD MANNERS : AN ANTIDOTE TO RACISM AND INEQUALITY

Can you imagine if everyone in the world becomes civilized and mannered such that the poor become equal to the rich in regards to treatment, and the strong become alike the weak in regards to preference? Without lecturing ahead, i will assume that the title of this sub topic (I) is sufficient to help the reader gauge the importance of manners to eradicate and abolish racism.

Almost every other hadeeth and religious book in Islaam has a chapter/book dedicated to narrating the manners of the prophet (s.a.w) , his companions (sahaabas) and the righteous predecessors (salaafus saaliheen) so much so that it is difficult to compile or collect them all in a blog post. So one can understand the importance of manners. However a few more hadeeth below just to add a touch to this topic for those who aren't aware.

Sufyan Ath-Thawri would say, “When a man intended to write the Prophet’s sayings, he would study good manners and worship for twenty years before that.”

[Abu Na’eem, Hilyat al-Awliya 361]

1. You (O Muhammad) are of the highest noble character. [ Surah Al–Qalam (68): 4]

2. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Indeed, I have only been sent to complete the noblest of manners.” [Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Ahmad, Al-Hakim]

3. Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never used bad language neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." [Bukhari & Muslim]

4. Narrated Ummul Mu'minin, Aisha: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “By his good character a believer will attain the degree of one who prays during the night and fasts during the day.” [Abu Dawood, Al-Hakim]

5. Narrated AbudDarda': The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “There is nothing heavier than good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dawood]

6. Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “He who does not show mercy to our little ones or recognize the rights of our elders is not one of us.” [Musnad Ahmad, Number 7033, Sahih]

7. Prophet (s.a.w) said " and however you love for the people to treat you, then treat them that way; and however you hate for the people to treat you, then do not treat them that way.” [At-Tabarani, Al-Ma’jam Al-Kabeer, Number 15833, Sahih]

(II) WHAT DOES THE QUR'AN SAY ABOUT RACISM, EQUALITY AND GOOD CONDUCT

One of the root cause of racism is arrogance. A person's arrogance causes him to differentiate between himself and others in a racist way

Do not walk proudly on the earth; your feet cannot tear apart the earth nor are you as tall as the mountains.[ Qur'an 17:37]

O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun. Verily, Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Al-Hujurat 49:13)

Asbaab Al Nuzool (Cause of the revelation of this verse)

This verse was revealed on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. When it was time for prayer, the Holy Prophet asked Sayyidna Bilal to call the adhan. One of the pagan Quraish cynically remarked: "Thank God that my father died before this happened, and he did not have to see this bad day. Harith Ibn Hisham remarked: Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black crow to sound the adhan in the Sacred Mosque! Abu Sufyan said: I do not wish to utter anything for fear that the master of the heavens will inform him. Thus Jibra'il came down and informed the Holy Prophet about this conversation. The Holy Prophet called then and asked them about it. They admitted. At this, the current verse was revealed. [Maulana Muhammad Taqi Usmani - Ma'ariful Quran - Volume 8 - Pages 143-144]

Nevertheless, Tafseer Ibn Katheer mentions a similar story, further explaining the meaning of this verse and he stated a long hadith at the end of which the prophet (s.a.w) gathered the people and said :

O people! Allah the Exalted has removed from you the slogans of Jahiliyyah and its tradition of honoring forefathers. Men are of two types, a man who is righteous, fearful of Allah and honorable to Allah, or a man who is vicious, miserable and little to Allah the Exalted. Verily, Allah the Exalted and Most Honored said ....."Al Hujarat 49:13"

[Ref: the above hadeeth and its wordings can be found at : Sunan Al Tirmidhi 3270, Ibn Al Arabi in 'Aaradh Al Ahwadhi 6/337 (Sahih), Az-Zayla'ee's Takhreej-ul-Kashshaaf 3/349, Albaani in Sahih Al Tirmidhi 3270 or 3956,  Silsilah Al Saheeha 6/451, Saheeh Al Jaami' 7867, Baghawi in Sharh Al Sanaa 6/506, Sunan Abu Dawood 5116, Ibn Al 'Arabi in Ahkaam al Qur'an 4/158, Ibn Asaakir in معجم الشيوخ 1/59, Ibn Taymiyah in اقتضاء الصراط المستقيم 1/247, Al Mubarakpoori in Tuhfatul Ahwadhi 9/409]

(11) O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. (12). O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicion is sin. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother You would hate it. And have Taqwa of Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful [Al Hujarat 49: 11-12]

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Qur'an 76:8]

Serve Allah and join not any partners with Him: and do good to parents kinsfolk orphans those in need neighbors who are near neighbors who are strangers the companion by your side the way-farer (ye meet) and what your right hands possess: for Allah loveth not the arrogant the vainglorious [Qur'an 4:36]

See Rights of Family and blood relatives and the "obligation" to be kind to them http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.com/2012/10/obligation-of-upholding-ties-of-family.html

There are more verses enjoining equality and good manners and forbidding defaming or slandering such as surah Al Humazah and etc but I'll keep it short. All these qualities (manners, equality and etc. are the foundations to build on so as to demolish racism)

(III) WHAT DO THE AHADEETH [TRADITIONS OF THE PROPHET (S.A.W)] SAY ABOUT RACISM

1) The Prophet (s.a.w) foretold about people being infected with pride and racism

Abu Malik al-Ashari narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: ”There are four matters of jaahiliyyah (ignorance) that exist among my ummah and they will not give them up: boasting about one’s forefathers, casting aspersions (slander/insult) upon people’s lineages, seeking rain by the stars and wailing for the dead.” [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 2 pg. 644) No. 934]

Abu Huraira said: Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: Indeed, Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds." (Sahih Muslim, #2564).

2) Prophet (s.a.w) thus preached for unity and equality and to give the rights.

Allaah says: {The believers are but a brotherhood.} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49): 10]

Narrated Anas: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "None of you will have faith (imaan) till he likes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." [Bukhari]

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allaah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allaah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allaah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection." [Bukhari]

Narrated Abu Hurairah: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said,"Allaah helps the servant as long as the servant helps his brother" [Muslim]

Narrated Nauman bin Bashir: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The parable of the believers in relation to the kindness, mercy and compassion they have for each other, is that of the body: when an organ of it falls ill, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness." [Bukhari]

Narrated Abu Musa: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other." The Prophet then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced (while saying that). [Bukhari]

TO TREAT MUSLIM OR NON- MUSLIM WITH RESPECT AND MERCY AND TO GIVE THEIR RIGHTS

1) The topic of manners and the verses of the Qur'an which speak about being humble, merciful and best in manners and character are general commandments applying upon all. Hence a Muslim when ordered to be of good manner and character, has to be so with both a Muslim as well as a Non Muslim.

2) Mercy and Manners of the prophet (s.a.w) to Non Muslims : http://the-finalrevelation.blogspot.com/2012/09/Mercy-ofthe-prophet-for-Nonmuslims.html

4)  Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years

[Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 391]

5) Hisham reported on the authority of his father that Hisham b. Hakim b. Hizam happened to pass by people, the farmers of Syria, who had been made to stand in the sun. He said: What is the matter with them? They said: They have been detained for Jizya. Thereupon Hisham said: I bear testimony to the fact that I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah would torment those who torment people in the world

[Saheeh Muslim Book 032, Number 6328]

3) Prophet (s.a.w) makes no difference between a rich or a poor or one who is honored in the society or not with regards to the punishment of Allah

Al-Bara' b. 'Azib reported:

There happened to pass by Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) a Jew blackened and lashed. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) called them (the Jews) and said: Is this the punishment that you find in your Book (Torah) as a prescribed punishment for adultery? They said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) called one of the scholars amongst them and said: I ask you in the name of Allah Who sent down the Torah on Moses if that is the prescribed punishment for adultery that you find in your Book. He said: No. Had you not asked me in the name of Allah, I would not have given you this information. We find stoning to death (as punishment prescribed in the Torah). But this (crime) became quite common amongst our aristocratic (upper/rich) class. So when we caught hold of any rich person (indulging in this offence) we spared him, but when we caught hold of a helpless person we imposed the prescribed punishment upon him. We then said: Let us argree (on a punishment) which we can inflict both upon the rich and the poor. So We decided to blacken the face with coal and flog as a substitute punishment for stoning. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I am the first to revive Thy command when they had made it dead......(cont : http://sunnah.com/urn/242140

[Ref: Sahih Muslim Book 17, Hadith 4214, Sunan Ibn Majah : Arabic : Book 20, Hadith 2655]

'A'isha reported that the Quraish had been anxious about the Makhzumi woman who had committed theft, and said: Who will speak to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) about her? They said: Who dare it, but Usama, the loved one of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)? So Usama spoke to him. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah? He then stood up and addressed (people) saying: O people, those who have gone before you were destroyed, because if any one of high rank committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and it anyone of low rank committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would have her hand cut off. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Ibn Rumh (the words are):" Verily those before you perished."

[Ref: Sahih Muslim, The Book Pertaining to Punishments Prescribed by Islam (Kitab Al-Hudud), Hadeeth No. 4187,4188]

O Allah, whoever is given charge over my nation (ruler) and he is harsh with them (his subjects), then be harsh with him; and whoever is given charge over my nation and he is gentle with them, then be gentle with him.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Number 4494]

4) PROPHET (S.A.W) URGED TO TREAT SLAVES AS YOU WOULD TREAT YOURSELVES

This topic has a lot of ahadeeth out of which i shall mention only a few

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would visit the sick, attend the funeral, respond to the invitation of slaves.....

[Ref: Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Asceticism, Number 4178]

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined good treatment of slaves and he would say, “Feed them from the same food you eat and clothe them from the same clothes you wear; and do not torture the creation of Allah the Exalted.”

[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 188, Sahih]

in another narration from Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 4095, the prophet (s.a.w) ended his statement by saying "and do not burden them with work beyond their capabilities.”

Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “None of you strikes his slave unjustly except that the slave will be granted retaliation on the Day of Resurrection.”

[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 181, Sahih]

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never struck a woman with his hand and neither a servant, and he never struck anything with his hand except when he was struggling in the cause of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah did not take revenge for anything against himself but if the sacred law of Allah was violated, he would take retribution for the sake of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah was not presented two matters except that he would choose the easier one as long as it was not sinful, but if it was sinful he would be the furthest of the people from it.

[Musnad Ahmad, Number 27658, Sahih]

Aisha reported: Abu Bakr once cursed some of his slaves, so the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “O Abu Bakr! Those who curse or those who are true? No, by the Lord of the Ka’bah!” And he said it two or three times. One that very day, Abu Bakr freed some of his slaves; then, the Prophet came to him and he said, “Do not do it again.”

[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 319, Sahih]

Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported: When I was beating my servant, I heard a voice behind me (saying): "Abu Mas'ud, bear in mind Allah has more dominance over you than you have upon him". I turned and (found him) to be Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). I said: Allah's Messenger, I set him free for the sake of Allah. Thereupon, he said: "Had you not done that, (the gates of) Hell would have opened for you, or the fire would have burnt you."

[Sahih Muslim, Book 15, Number 4088 or chapter of Al-Iman (1659), Abu-Dawud (5159), Al-Tirmizi (1948), Ahmad (22404), Al-Bukhari: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1/264 (173), and Al-Tabarani: Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir (683) ]

Abu Bakr reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He will not enter Paradise who is evil to his slaves.”

[Musnad Ahmad, Number 32, Hasan]

Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Whoever frees his slave-girl and then marries her will have a double reward.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Marriage, Number 2053, Sahih]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “When your servant brings your food to you, if you do not ask him to join you, then at least ask him to take one or two handfuls, for he has suffered from its heat (while cooking it) and has taken pains to cook it nicely.”

[Volume 7, Book 65, Number 370 : Sahih Bukhari]

Note: There are numerous ahadeeth on this topic.

5) PROPHET COMMANDED RESPECTING A RULER EVEN IF HE WERE A SLAVE

Amir ibn Wathila reported: Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith met Umar at Usfan and Umar had employed him as a collector in Mecca. Umar said to him, “Who have you appointed as a collector for the people of the valley?” He said, “Ibn Abza.” Umar said, “Who is Ibn Abza?” He said, “He is one of our emancipated slaves.” Umar said, “You have appointed a freed slave over them?” He said, “He is learned in the Book of Allah the Exalted and he is knowledgeable of the religious commandments.” Umar said: It is as your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah raises the status of a people with this Book and he debases others.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 1780]

"Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle said, "You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin."

[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256]

Moreover, a slave is not be addressed with hurtful words.  The Prophet of Mercy stated not to address them as, ‘My slave boy or my slave girl.” He said, “All of you are salves of God!” Address them with, “O my young man, O my young lady!”[Sahih Muslim]

Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second ruler-caliph of Islam, was so fond of Salim, a freed slave, that he wished to appoint Salim to be the ruler-caliph if he were alive.  Salim used to lead the Muslims in prayer, considered an honor in Islamic tradition.

6) ISLAM DOES NOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN COLOR

"Narrated By 'Ata bin Abi Rabah : Ibn 'Abbas said to me, "Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise?" I said, "Yes." He said, "This black lady came to the Prophet and said, 'I get attacks of epilepsy and my body becomes uncovered; please invoke Allah for me.' The Prophet said (to her), 'If you wish, be patient and you will have (enter) Paradise; and if you wish, I will invoke Allah to cure you.' She said, 'I will remain patient,' and added, 'but I become uncovered, so please invoke Allah for me that I may not become uncovered.' So he invoked Allah for her."

"Narated By Abu Huraira : A black man or a black woman used to sweep the mosque and he or she died. The Prophet asked about her (or him). He was told that she (or he) had died. He said, "Why did you not inform me? Show me his grave (or her grave)." So he went to her (his) grave and offered her (his) funeral prayer."

Note: Notice that Muhammad (s.a.w) was upset because they did not inform him of the black person's death! Also notice how prophet (s.a.w) offered the funeral prayer AFTER the black person was buried and in the grave. That's how concerned and favourable he was.

Narrated Abu Huraira: At the time of the Fajr prayer the Prophet asked bilal , "Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise." bilal replied, "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me."

Sahih Bukhari, Book #21, Hadith #250

Note: Bilal (r.a)  was a black Ethiopian slave before Abu bakr freed him from the atrocities inflicted upon him due to his acceptance of Islaam

7) NO ONE IS SUPERIOR TO EACH OTHER EXCEPT IN PIETY

"The prophet, peace be upon him, said: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any "superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves."

[Ref: Hafiz Ibn Hibban reported in al-Sahih 11 / 203 / 4862 , via his isnad, from Fadalah ibn Ubayd & Baihaqi. Also Narrated By: Abu Nadra In: Musnad ‘Abd Allah Ibn Al-Mubarak - #239 - See http://www.islamweb.net/hadith/display_hbook.php?hflag=1&bk_no=28&pid=304844 ]

"Narrated Jabir Bin Abdullah: The Prophet (SAW) said: O People! Your Lord is one and your father (Adam) is one. There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab or of a non-Arab over an Arab, or of a red man over a black man or of a black man over a red man, except in piety in the sight of Allah."

"The Prophet (saws) once reprimanded Abu Dharr for derisively calling Bilal, 'son of a black woman', then he went on to say, "Look! Surely you are not better than a brown man nor a black man except by fearing Allah more than them."

"Narrated Uqbah Bin Aamir: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: These lineages of yours do not make you superior to anyone. You are all sons of Adam. No one has superiority over another except in piety and consciousness. It is sufficient shame for one to be foul, evil, or stingy.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Thank God Who has removed from you the blemish of ignorance and its arrogance.
