Writers Needed at Nia Prima

Nia Prima is seeking writers to cover topics of interest to Muslim women.

This is a non-paying opportunity.

Muslim Mothering

Demeter Press, which claims to be the "first book publisher focused specifically on the topic of mothering and motherhood," is seeking submissions for an edited collection on Muslim Mothering. This is not a mere anthology, but a scholarly work that will include "multiple, varied, and even contradictory images, symbols, and representations of Muslim mothers and Muslim mothering." While the deadline to submit abstracts has already passed, it may be worth contacting the publisher to see if they will make any exceptions. The guidelines state that the work is to be published in 2012, while the website says 2013...so perhaps there is still some time left to make a contribution to what seems like it will be an interesting collection.

Have you been tested?

Umm Raiyaan, a sister involved in a beneficial new dawah project, sent me the following e-mail yesterday:

I am looking for revert sisters who have gone through some difficulty and have been tested. Perhaps the sister is still going through a test/difficulty. Or the test has passed and that sister is now stronger as a result. If you are such a sister and can spare about fifteen minutes to share your story then please can you kindly email me at ummraiyaan@googlemail.com and I will arrange a time where I or another sister will call you to ask you a few questions. Alternatively, instead of talking to us, you can email me a written description of the above. It should be no longer than 500 words long.

 

The test could be anything - ranging from loneliness, to financial problems, to abuse in a marriage. It could be from experiencing doubts in Islam, coping with raising children alone to post natal depression.

 

If you know of any revert sisters whom you know personally who have been tested or who are currently going through a test, please forward this to them. I appreciate your help and pray that Allah rewards you. Ameen.

Women's Voices from the Muslim World

Women’s Voices Now is hosting Women’s Voices from the Muslim World: A Short-Film Festival, "giving a voice to women of all faiths living in Muslim-majority countries and Muslim women living as minorities around the globe."

According to the website:

Filmmakers of any gender, nationality and religion are invited to submit films, but emphasis will be put on generating submissions from women living in Muslim-majority countries.

And:

Cash prizes totaling $35,000 will be awarded to winners in several categories including Fiction, Documentary, Student Films and an Experimental category encouraging submissions of silent films, animated films, mobile films and photo montages, as well as films where the content outweighs the technical tools and skills of the filmmaker.

Submissions are currently open and will remain open until November 1, 2010 without charge. However, filmmakers may submit films until November 24, 2010 for a US$20 fee.

Muslimette: A New Paying Market

Muslimette is a new on-line magazine of interest to Muslim women.

According to the website:

Muslimette Magazine focuses on Muslim women living in a western world with Islam as their guide. In the magazine, you’ll find fun articles about fashion and beauty, inspiring stories about real Muslim women, tips about single and married life, and much more!

Writers will be happy to know that Muslimette is a paying market and is seeking article writers, bloggers, photographers, researchers, and more. Basic guidelines can be found here. ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS:
We are looking for honest, intriguing, and surprising real-life stories and personal essays about Muslim women in their 20s and 30s (give/take a few years). The stories can be about Muslim women who live anywhere in the world, but they should still be relatable and relevant to the lives and concerns of our reader.

We are also looking for tips, lists, and opinion articles that advise and inform the reader on various aspects of her life, from relationships (no topic is taboo as long as it is handled with class and with the Qur'an in mind), life, faith, work, money, and contemporary events. -- Anything that affects our reader or that will leave her feeling informed, inspired, and/or amused. Please include quotes and anecdotes with these types of articles.

PICTURES:
We would prefer that you submit pictures with your articles, but if that's not possible, we will find alternatives.

THE TONE/STYLE:
Please have a look at Glamour and Marie Claire for an idea of what our style will be like. Muslimette is like a Muslim version of those magazines - minus all the talk about celebs and one-night-stands.

We would like to feature stories similar to those that are published in the magazines above, but with a Muslimah spin on them.

Women and Islam Research & Writing Interns

WISE, the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality, is seeking research and writing interns to work on creating content for their web portal. Areas of focus include, but not limited to: Muslim women leaders past and present; contemporary Muslim women artists from all over the world; Muslim women’s activism past and present; women hadith scholars, jurists, mufftiyahs; historical and contemporary case studies of Muslim women creating positive social change in their communities; current issues (i.e. FGC, domestic violence, religious and political authority, marriage and divorce, etc.) affecting Muslim women worldwide; grassroots organizations and campaigns working on these issues.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity.
