LastProphet.info invites postgraduate students to submit articles on Islamic topics related to Hadith and/or Sirah, Islamophobia, perceptions of Islam and/or Prophet Muhammad in the media. Articles could be about misrepresentations and misconceptions of Islam and Prophet Muhammad in the post 9/11 world, or they could refer back to as early as 14th century perceptions.

Introducing OnIslam.net

It has been a while since I posted anything about the crisis at IslamOnline.net (IOL). Nearly seven months after IOL was suddenly taken over by a new Qatar-based administration bent on changing the site's mission and vision, the English-language portion of the site no longer exists.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Anyone familiar with IOL knows what a huge resource IOL was to English-speaking Muslims around the world. The site contained thousands of pages of content on every conceivable topic and was a great source for news, scholarly opinions and inspiration. It was one of the few Islamic websites to do real reporting in the fields of health and science and cover important topics like Gaza that were being ignored by major media outlets. It was also a reliable source of information for non-Muslims wanting to learn more about Islam. IOL employed more than 250 people and worked with freelancers everywhere. Losing IOL has been a bit like losing a very good friend.

There is some good news to report, however. The whole time this crisis has been going on, the editorial team that founded IOL ten years ago has been working hard behind the scenes to create a new site that is very similar to the old one.

OnIslam.net was officially launched on October 9, 2010 and looks like it is off to a very good start. This time around, the editorial work will be separate from the funding, allowing the site to flourish as intended.

Many of IOL's old articles (no longer available at the old site) can be found at OnIslam.

As of now, I do not know if OnIslam is a paying market and how the rates will compare to those previously offered by IOL. Let's pray that the site receives the funding and support needed to continue this beneficial project.

Write about Young Adult Literature for About.com

About.com is seeking contributing writers to write articles on a variety of topics. There are several topics to choose from, but one in particular stood out to me as something I know that several of the visitors to this blog are qualified to take on: Young Adult Literature.

Among other things, the ideal candidate for this topic "will be familiar with major authors and publishers of young adult books and will have knowledge of adolescent development through education or experience. While not required, a background as a children’s librarian, middle or high school teacher, and/or a journalist who specializes in writing about teens is preferred.

"The candidate will be able to write content that helps users select appropriate young adult books for their needs. He or she will also be able to educate users on strategies for encouraging reluctant readers to read and criteria for selecting books."

Contributing writers are guaranteed $500 per month for their first year writing for the site. There is also the potential to earn more so long as the site grows from month to month.

According to this Craigslist ad, writers are needed to compose "prayer poems" for Prayables.com, a website for people of all faiths. This sounds like it could be a very positive opportunity for interested Muslims to share the beauty of Islamic prayer.

MuslimYouth.net is seeking writers to write articles, blog entries and poems for its website. Writers should be at least 15 years old. It appears that this is a non-paying opportunity.

Halal.com, a Chicago-based Muslim e-commerce company, is currently seeking freelance writers and journalists for its web portal. The company is seeking article and feature writers, bloggers, photographers, researchers, reviewers and others.

According to information I received by e-mail, topics of interest include: consumer research articles on the Muslim consumer packaged goods market; halal industry growth and opportunities; halal consumer and business news; analysis of halal trade and consumer legislation; analysis of halal consumer product retailing and supply chain issues; halal consumer marketing trends; and interviews with budding entrepreneurs of halal consumer businesses.

Muslimette is a new on-line magazine of interest to Muslim women.

We would like to feature stories similar to those that are published in the magazines above, but with a Muslimah spin on them.
